Television

2020 has brought about many interesting opportunities. One of these opportunities for myself has been maximized free time. Especially compared to what I had prior to the pandemic. It seemed that whenever I wasn’t working from home, all I ever did was eat… and watch TV. I don’t know about anyone else, but this gave me plenty of time to binge my favorite TV shows. One TV show that I am currently binging on Netflix is Designated Survivor. This show follows a fictional story of a man who is the designated survivor for the government. He is put in place in case of disaster and someone needs to take over control of the country. In an unparalleled turn of events, the U.S. capitol building is bombed during the state of the union and all of congress is killed. Immediately, the designated survivor is named President. This show has many different elements to it and I will be analyzing how it relates to previous types of media. Looking at the TV show, Designated Survivor,...

Cartoons

Image
The cartoons that I chose are all depictions of conditions of kids in the pandemic. Particularly in regards to going back to school. I thought that all of these went well together because it shows the struggles that students are facing in going back to school this year in a satirical way. I think it's important to make light of hard situations to help to stay positive because otherwise you can get really discouraged.

Visual Analysis

Looking at these articles from the New York Times, it shows the difference between how the media handles situations with President Trump and how they handle stories about Joe Biden. The front page of the website is filled with ridicule about Trump contracting COVID, but only features one article about how Biden has to pivot his campaign. Below, I will analyze these from all of the different perspectives described in chapter 6.    Personal Perspective:  Immediately when I look at these articles, I’m prone to agree with the ones that are slandering Trump because of my personal political opinions.    Historical Perspective:  In all of the photos in these articles, it shows Donald Trump without a mask on and Joe Biden with a mask on. Trump has a history of being anti-mask as far as the COVID-19 pandemic goes, therefore it’s easy for the New York Times to use this as a way to make him look bad now that he has contracted the virus. By putting up a photo of...

Visual Stereotypes

Part A:  Analysis The magazine that I chose was Newsweek magazine’s issue for the week of August 21-28th this year. The title of this issue was The Other Pandemic. Through this magazine, I was actually surprised at how little advertisements were included in this issue. Throughout the whole magazine there was quite a few advertisements for the magazine itself asking you to sign up for a membership. I thought that was interesting because you are already reading the magazine so it seems that that demographic doesn’t need to be targeted as much. The only other ad that is included is an ad for Harry’s of London which is an exclusively men’s shoes company. I think that this could be seen as stereotypical because there are no ads in the magazine that exclusively target women. This magazine is very intellectual and it feels like by only featuring ads that target men they have clearly left out women.  Part B   I think that it is extremely difficult to get away from any ster...

Here's the link to the song that I chose by Max Richter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLDvbnK_Sqk Part A: Sensing I listened to Max Richter’s Vivaldi, the Four Seasons: Spring 1. I decided to use a black pen to depict what I was hearing. The song includes both high pitched notes in the foreground as well as smooth ones in the background. This lead me to create smooth, curved lines, and also jagged angles.  The finished item looked like this:  Part B: Selecting I chose a section of the drawing that looked like it had both tones of the song in it. The jagged angles, but also smooth curvature. Once I separated that section from the rest of the picture, I selected some colors that I thought reminded me of the song. I felt like using both cool and warm colors that still complemented each other made the most sense. I feel that the lighter colors stand out more as the foreground and the darker colors blend in as the background.  This part looks like this: Part C: Perceiving I...
